From Our Board President
Dear YMCA in Greenfield Community,
It is my distinct pleasure and privilege to serve as President of the Board of Directors for the YMCA in Greenfield in 2018/19. The coming year offers challenges and opportunities the likes of which the Y has rarely seen, and yet I am excited to take them on along with the fantastic team of staff, members, and volunteers in our community.
In July of 2019, Bob Sunderland, Executive Director of the YMCA in Greenfield since August 1987, will begin his retirement. This fall, Y-USA, members of our Board and community will enter into the process of finding and selecting Bob’s replacement. Our job will not be an easy one. Bob’s sure hand and sharp pencil have helped to position the YMCA in Greenfield for success upon his departure. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his service. Thank you, Bob.
This fiscal year marks the start of an increased minimum wage schedule in Massachusetts. Along with other rising costs, this puts tremendous pressure on the Y to be able to provide important services in our community while still making sure that nobody is turned away due to a lack of funds. The YMCA in Greenfield has spent the past few years getting ready for these changes, and I am happy to report that our Y is going in prepared.
In order to meet the ongoing challenges of changing financial conditions and to extend the reach of our mission, the Y will be looking at opportunities to partner with others in our area that share our mission. I hope to share more about this in the months to come. In the meantime, the Y will be introducing an exciting new spinning program, a new Youth Swim Lesson format, and other youth and adult options.
With big changes come big opportunities. I am excited that our Y is well positioned to take on both in the months to come. The passion and commitment of our staff, members, and volunteers to healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility will continue. I know that our community will respond admirably to make 2018/19 one of the best years yet for the YMCA in Greenfield.
